Baby Girl Blanket

IMG_0759

Hello hello,

I’ve been getting my sewing on.  The first project I recently tackled was this little flannel baby blanket.  I found some flannel that I loved at fabric.com and just had to have it.  I made a rectangle (practically a square) of about 36” x 35” and just used some bias tape to go around the edges.  Easy peasy.  For a tutorial, you can check out the baby blanket over at Prudent Baby, although hers has a layer of batting to thicken things up a bit.

I’m wondering if I should have gone with a lighter pink bias tape, but I wasn’t about to go back to the store.  This one package perfectly fit around my project, which made me happy (again, I didn’t want another trip to the store).  I love how soft flannel is.

It’s got cows and ducks! Love it!

Merry Christmas Lights

Today’s Remembrance Day (Veteran’s Day in the US).  If I’m not heading to a cenotaph, I like to spend the morning listening to a special radio show commemorating the day.  I feel that it’s important to hear stories and listen to songs with the theme of remembering everything that our veterans have done, and the brutality of war.  It’s something that I hope my children will never have to endure, as I never have.

My card today is of an uplifting sort.  Cheerful Christmas red and green… I designed this card again using the Christmas Lane Simply Scrappin kit.  I used the hemp twine to mimic a twisted string of Christmas lights.

This card uses Lucky Limeade, Cherry Cobbler, and Early Espresso cardstocks.

Have a wonderful day, make sure to do some remembering.

Candy Cane Christmas

Hello lovelies,

It’s only Wednesday, yet this week is feeling great!  I completely cleaned out my craft room so that it’s hopefully more user-friendly for me.  Since I have such a tiny space in which to work, I decided to pack up a lot of my non-Stampin’ Up items.  Hopefully in our next home I’ll have more space to bring all that stuff back out.

I haven’t used the craft room it in its shiny new (cleaner) form yet, but I do have a card that I made on the weekend to share with you.

This is another card where I used the awesome Christmas Lane Simply Scrappin kit.  Love it!  I whipped this card together in no time flat, and had everything I needed other than the button and twine.  I especially like the little tags included in this set.

Bright Christmas Cards with Snowflakes

Hey there,

It’s been a busy weekend!  Not sure if my head’s on straight, and I’m not slowing down just yet.  There were many meals out, lots of crafty time, and time with friends.  Sounds great to me, and I’m sure sleep will come crashing down on me tonight.

Nathan’s out laser tagging it up – totes not my thing.  So I’m hanging out, getting a bit of quiet alone time.  Of course, that means I’m thinking about what I could reorganize next.  My craft room (closet) is pretty high up on that list.

I recently made this series of cards for a class.  They’re all using the Simply Scrappin’ Christmas Lane set, which comes with cardstock, DSP, and card-weight stickers.  These cards were so much fun to create!  I also used the Snow Burst Embossing Folder on each of them for that neat white-on-white texture.

This set made it possible to create cards without much effort at all.  For the stocking card I just added a touch of glitter.

And here’s a slight variation.

If you wanted a sentiment on the front, it could be added in the form of a tag, or stamped onto the white snowflake layer before running it through the Big Shot.  I chose to put my sentiment on the inside.

Delicious Homemade Cranberry Hazelnut Crisps

Hello, and happy Friday!

I promised a while ago that I’d share this awesome cracker recipe with you.  They’re very much like those amazing (and expensive!!!) Raincoast Crisps, and are easy to make – just like biscotti.

I make the full batch, and freeze a loaf for later.  I get about 30 crackers per loaf, but you could probably put more time into cutting them and get a few more.  Serve with brie or soft goat cheese like I have here.

 Homemade Cranberry Hazelnut Crisps

2 cups flour
2t baking soda
1/2 t salt
2c buttermilk
1/4c brown sugar
1/4c honey
1c craisins
1/2c chopped hazelnuts
1/2c roasted pumpkin seeds
1/4c sesame seeds
1/4c ground flax seed

Preheat oven to 350F.  In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt.  In a smaller bowl, combine the buttermilk, brown sugar, and honey.  Stir gently into the flour mixture, then stir in the remaining ingredients until just combined.  Don’t over mix.

Grease two little loaf pans (I used 8 1/2” x 4 1/2” pans, but slightly smaller would be great), and divide the batter between them.  Bake for about 35-40 minutes, until the loaves are golden.  Remove and cool on a wire rack.

Once cool, I like to freeze my loaves.  They’re far easier to cut when frozen.

Preheat oven to 300F.  Using a serrated or very sharp chef’s knife, slice the loaf in the thinnest slices you can.  Lay in one layer on a cookie sheet – not touching, and bake for 15min.  Flip them and bake for another 10-15 min.  Remember that they’ll crisp up a bit more once you remove from the oven, so don’t burn them.

Enjoy!

Clean and Simple Thank you

Happy Halloween!  Here’s to hoping nothing bad happens today.  Just some nice tricks and treats.

I feel like I did Halloween already, since we celebrated a bit with friends this weekend.  Friends with kids!  I don’t see them very often, so it was pretty neat to spend a good chunk of time with them and their boys.  It’s a bit of a glimpse into our future.  Woah.. we’re going to have a baby in 3 months!  I’d better get my sewing on today!

About this card – So quick!  A strip of Designer Series Paper (Paisley Petals), two strips of the Scallop Trim Border, and a stamped and punched sentiment from the Decorative Label punch.

They make a very easy set of cards.

Best Wishes for Fall Card

Have you figured out a Halloween costume yet? No? Me neither.  Maybe I can just put on some makeup and call myself “glam.”   Hmmmmm… I do have this really awesome neon orange tiger face shirt, so I could wear that and some tights if all else fails.  Minimal effort.  I guess I’m just not a very Halloweeny person.  Christmas is my thing, although I do have a soft spot for all that candy.

So no, this isn’t a Halloween card.  Nope nope.  It’s all about fall.  Scarves, cozy sweaters, and boots.  Curl up with a warm pumpkin spice latte.  Sounds perfect.

This card was quick and painless.  Punch out some 1.5” circles from the Spice Cake DSP, stamp your layered leaf and roughly cut it out.  Punch a border, add some ribbon and a sentiment, and you’re done!  5-10 minutes.

PS: on the baby front…  We had another ultrasound yesterday and she was oh-so cute!  It was pretty neat to see little kicks and wiggles, and get to feel them at the same time.  At one point the tech even showed us a 3D image!  We’re almost at the 3-month mark, which is getting exciting/scary.

Crisp Fall Best Wishes

Hi, hi, hi…

Halloween candy.. It’s everywhere!  I want to gobble all those mini chocolate bars.  20 in one sitting, please.  Would that make me a bad person?  No, you all do that? Whew, ok!  25 in one sitting though, that’s a whole different story.

Really what I should be eating is lots of whole grains, veggies, and protein. Boo.  No fun in that at all… Bring on the chocolate bars, cupcakes, creamy delicious brie!

Make a card while eating said chocolate bars, cupcakes, and brie.  This one’s easy – no extra sponging or anything.  Clean lines and crisp fall colours.

See that Pool Party cardstock and ribbon?  Isn’t it just the perfect colour for everything?  It works here as a fall card, yet it’s great for spring, summer, bright and cheerful cards.  To boot, it works as a fantastic colour in a Christmas card.  I should really be stocking up on it now.

The Spice Cake Designer Series Paper, and Falling Leaves stamp set really make this card happen. But between you and me, it’s that Pool Party colour that is the game changer.

Fall Layers Card

Hey there,

Do you ever have mega fitness days?  I know I have lots of super duper couch potato days, but sometimes there are one of two little bouts of fitness mixed in.  Today was especially active!  I finally dragged myself to prenatal yoga, which involved a good hard walk there and back.  This afternoon Nathan and I spent a good chunk of time practicing our frisbee flicks for ultimate.  Fun! My arm is sore! It might fall off! (not really.. but maybe…).  How will I write on the board while teaching?

It’s fall! The air’s a bit cooler, the rain’s on its way, but sometimes there’s an amazing day or two of sunshine!  To celebrate fall, I made some fall cards.

I used the new Gently Falling stamp set here, paired with Spice Cake paper and fabric.  I love the effect of the strip of fabric used as ribbon here.  Simply tear off a piece and tie it around your card.

Clean and Simple Butterflies

You know what’s awesomely un-awesome about living near to downtown?  The noisy drunken people and/or crazies that we can hear in the middle of the night.  Decidedly un-awesome.

Last night sounded like a bit of a yelling match to see who could be louder, and how many complaints could be racked up within an hour.  Ex: “can you hear me? CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW???!!!”

There was recently a good hour or more with a cab parked below my window, with the music BLARING (poor driver?).  Every so often the girls inside would jump out and start dancing, letting the music pour out around her.  When the random question of “why are we even here?” was asked, I found myself wondering the same thing. Oh, crazy drunk girls…

A few months back we had a real special case.  Some guy screamed the same lovely phrase over and over at the top of his lungs while wandering around the neighbourhood to himself.  That one got some special police attention.

Being able to walk downtown in 10 minutes has its perks, but this angry pregnant woman has very little patience for the drunks and the crazies (or the crazy drunks).  Go on, take your party another block away, please.

Bright spot? I made a card!  This one will be good for my upcoming Stamp n’ Stack – Any Occasions – card class.  Clean, simple, easy, poppin’.

The sketch is from the current challenge over at Clean and Simple Stamping.  Just my style!

Fingers crossed that tonight will be a quiet one!

Copied Cards

I definitely have a problem… It’s a copying problem.  To be nice, they call it “CASE-ing,” but we all know the truth about my little affliction.  You see, sometimes ruts happen.. or sometimes you just need to create a beautiful card for a class that very night, and hey, someone else has come up with the perfect idea.

Yep, I’m pretty sure it’s an ok problem to have.  I get to make pretty things, scour the internet for lots of ideas, and then share them with you all.  Fun times all around, right?

So this cute butterfly card is straight outta the Stampin’ Up! Idea Book & Catalogue (p.217), except that I changed the colours around, and I don’t have that slightly larger sized butterfly *yet.*  Oooh, I guess I changed the little sentiment part a bit.  The butterflies are from the amazing Beautiful Wings Embosslits Die.  Love it. We were meant to be.

This one? Way more copied.. Maybe you didn’t believe me when I said it was an affliction… I got the idea from here (Stampin Pretty).  It’s a card she’d received from Kris Kilcoyne in a swap.  This card makes my heart just a tad bit happier.  There’s something so fun and simple about the layered tone-on-tone kraft cardstock with texture.  This layering technique looks amazing in white too.

What did I do different from Kris?  Not a heck of a lot… The snowflake die is one minor touch.  It’s new! You can only get it until January 3rd!  I also added a sentiment, and used a little piece of the new Lucky Limeade Ruffled Ribbon.

Happy happy card-making-and-copying times!

Merry Merry Tree

Hello, lovelies!

Mid-October? What happened? Halloween’s coming up.. and then Christmas, New Years, and BABY! I’m so not ready.. I have nothing ready, except for one pair of booties. Woah.  OK, mini freakout over…

At least I have a card for you!  These are from a recent class – some very much copied from fabulous cards on the internetz.

Neat idea for a 3D tree, eh?  And hey, it’s super simple!  For the little tag I used the top/bottom of my Decorative Label Punch.  Kind of tricky, but I just love how it turns out!  You cut your 2 strips of paper, stamp on the white, then carefully punch each end by slipping the paper through the back side of the punch.  Adhere to the green piece, then line it up in the punch and snip to the right size.

This is me trying to get a head start on my Christmas cards.  I think I need like 50 of them.. probably more.. and I now have about 10.  Let’s do some Christmas card classes, friends!

CASEd Cards

Hi, hi!

I’ve got some totally CASEd cards for you.  Not my ideas at all.. but hey, that’s why we share them, right?

This flag card was inspired by Karen’s Three Cheers card.  I just love the creativity of using this Japanese washi tape (fun word for prettied up masking tape).  I’m a big fan of the Melon Mambo/Basic Grey combo.

Aren’t these little birdies cute?  People keep telling me that they’d never have looked twice at that stamp set before seeing it on a card like this.  I got this idea (colours, and all) directly from Amy Wanford of Crafting Confessions.  She’s a talented lady!  I really like that lace border just at the top.

And finally, there’s this fun flowery Just for You card.  I was playing around with bits of scrap cardstock and somehow landed on this colour combo.  The new Pool Party (that soft blue) works with almost everything!

This card is pretty darn close to a gorgeous one, again by Amy Wanford.  I had to go buy special masking tape just for this card, as my green painter’s tape kept tearing the paper where the rubber had pressed down.  So worth the special tape!

Hey, hey you! Have a great weekend!

Handmade Cloth Baby Wipes

I’m watching The Biggest Loser, and I’m munching on a crazy delicious salted chocolate chip cookie.  Bad Shauna.  Now don’t tell me you don’t sit and munch on things while watching that show.  I promise I’ll exercise tomorrow!

Ignore my eating habits.  Let’s talk about these soft flannel baby wipes.  I’m trying to avoid big decisions like choosing/finding baby furniture, so I did a little sewing project.  At least, I thought it was little, until I decided to make 25 of these wipes!  Whew.  Still, they’re easy!

Our plan (at least so far) is to use cloth diapers and cloth wipes whenever we can, so I figured I’d make my own wipes.  I just cut squares of 8×8” flannel, sewed around it inside out, left a little section so I could turn them right-side-out, then ironed and topstitched around.  There’s one little thing off my list.

More Masculine Cards

It’s Canadian Thanksgiving right now, and let me tell you, it’s been a busy one for us!  3 dinners and a lunch to attend.  I keep having to remind myself to breathe.  And my entire wardrobe officially does not fit.  Time to get myself some super stretchy maternity pants!  You see, moderation isn’t something I’ve learned too well, and turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie are all just so delicious!

But hey, these cards, they’re slim and sleek and manly.  Totally un-Thanksgiving-ey, except that a guy will be totally impressed if you give him one.

Again, the car’s from the Need for Speed set (122715) in the new 2011/2012 catalogue.  I’m hooked on it!

Does this card look familiar?  I’ve used the exact same layout with a different stamp.  I love how the quad is so rugged and burly there.  It works well with the roughness of the background.  Speaking of, I just used a clear block for my cling stamps to get those rectangles.  Worked like a charm.  To think I used to buy special stamps to get that effect!

Isn’t this baker’s string great stuff?  It also comes in white and Cherry Cobbler.

Alright, back to recovering from my food coma.
